Abstract: Ogni giorno, in tutto il mondo, grandi quantità di rifiuti radioattivi di alto livello sono messi in depositi provvisori vulnerabili ai disastri naturali o artificiali. In Finlandia si sta costruendo il primo deposito permanente al mondo - un enorme sistema di tunnel sotterranei scavati nella roccia solida. È essenziale che duri 100.000 anni, perché questo è il tempo in cui le scorie rimangono radioattive. Every day, all over the world, large quantities of high-level radioactive waste are put into temporary repositories vulnerable to natural or man-made disasters. In Finland, the world's first permanent repository is being built - a huge system of underground tunnels carved into solid rock. It is essential that it lasts 100,000 years, because that is how long the waste remains radioactive. After the waste is stored, the facility will be sealed, never to be opened again. But can this be guaranteed? How can we warn our remote descendants about the waste we have left buried? What languages and signs will they understand? And, if they do understand, will they want to comply with our instructions?
