Abstract: Un uomo vive ormai da anni in Italia, anche se è originario della Cambogia. È un uomo tranquillo, un professionista, ha una famiglia. Ma il suo passato nasconde qualcosa di terribile. La sua è una storia di paura e sofferenza. L’uomo è l’ultimo sopravvissuto della sua famiglia ai massacri del regime di Pol Pot. Forse. In realtà, suo fratello minore potrebbe essere ancora vivo. L’uomo rompe ogni indugio e decide di partire, di tornare in Cambogia a cercare cosa resta della sua vita precedente, a ricercare le tracce del fratello, che credeva scomparso. Il viaggio ha inizio e, tappa dopo tappa, l’uomo scopre e riscopre la tragedia di un popolo e ciò che rimane della sua memoria. A partire dal vero nome dell’uomo, cancellato per la paura di essere ucciso: Bovannrith, che significa, appunto, «oro splendente». Cinema come viaggio, nello spazio e nel tempo; cinema come visione di ciò che rimane nascosto nella memoria. Un percorso apparentemente semplice e lineare che diventa una riflessione profonda sullo sguardo e sul rapporto tra un corpo e i luoghi del suo passato. “Ora che devo raccontare la mia storia, sono costretto a esplorare la mia memoria fin nei più reconditi meandri e a volte non so più se ciò che torna alla luce con fatica sia vero, oppure il frutto di un fenomeno psichico”. For years, a man with Cambodian roots has been living in Italy. He’s a calm, professional, family man. But there is something horrible lurking in his past. His story is full of fear and suffering. He may be the last member of his family to have survived the massacres of Pol Pot. Maybe. His younger brother may still be alive. Without delay, the man decides to leave, to return to Cambodia in search of what remains of his past life, to retrace his brothers’ footsteps. Thus his trip begins. Stop after stop, the man is met with the tragedy of his people and what remains of his own memory, beginning with his name, which he changed for fear of his safety: Bovannrith, which means, "shining gold". The film travels through time and space and envisions what remains hidden in one’s past. A seemingly simple and linear story becomes a profound reflection on the relationship between the body and the places in its past. “Now that I must tell my story, I must explore my memory, down to the most recondite meanderings, and sometimes I’m no longer sure whether what comes tortuously to light is true or the fruit of some psychic phenomenon…” (Bovannrith Tho Nguon)
