Abstract: Il film rende omaggio alla breve ma influente vita di una persona straordinaria: l'attrice Candy Darling, nata James Slattery in un sobborgo di Long Island nel 1944. Attratto dal femminile fin dall'infanzia, a metà degli anni Sessanta James era diventato Candy, una splendida attrice bionda, nota nell'ambiente di New York. La carriera di Candy la portò attraverso la scena teatrale Off-off-Broadway e nella leggendaria Factory di Andy Warhol. Per Warhol recitò in due film della Factory che ancora oggi scioccano e divertono: "Flesh" e "Women in Revolt". Candy usò la fama di Warhol per ottenere altri ruoli cinematografici, e il suo ammiratore Tennessee Williams la scritturò nella sua opera teatrale "Small Craft Warnings". Sognava di diventare una star di Hollywood, ma morì tragicamente di linfoma nei primi anni Settanta, a soli ventinove anni. La bellezza, l'umorismo e la morte precoce di Candy, il coraggio che ci voleva per vivere come una donna, le feste glamour e gli amici famosi - soprattutto la forza di volontà che ha dimostrato nel suo notevole atto di auto-creazione - hanno commosso coloro che l'hanno conosciuta durante la sua vita e continua a raccogliere fan oggi.
The film pays tribute to the short but influential life of an extraordinary person: actress Candy Darling, born James Slattery in a Long Island suburb in 1944. Attracted to the feminine since childhood, by the mid-1960s James had become Candy, a beautiful blonde actress, well-known in New York circles. Candy's career took her through the off-off-Broadway theatre scene and into Andy Warhol's legendary Factory. For Warhol she starred in two Factory films that still shock and amuse: 'Flesh' and 'Women in Revolt'. Candy used Warhol's fame to land other film roles, and her admirer Tennessee Williams cast her in his play 'Small Craft Warnings'. She dreamed of becoming a Hollywood star, but tragically died of lymphoma in the early 1970s, aged just 29. Candy's beauty, humour and early death, the courage it took to live as a woman, the glamorous parties and famous friends - above all the willpower she showed in her remarkable act of self-creation - moved those who knew her during her lifetime and continues to garner fans today.
