Abstract: Richard P. Rogers (1944–2001) era un regista sperimentale, un documentarista che ha passato la vita a registrarsi nella speranza che un giorno ne sarebbe emerso un autoritratto coerente. Questo non è successo durante la sua esistenza, perché Rogers è morto di cancro nel 2001. Ma il suo ex studente e amico Alexander Olchs, con l'aiuto della moglie di Rogers, Susan Meiselas, ha completato il lavoro che Rogers, paralizzato dalla paura di indulgere nel proprio narcisismo, aveva solo abbozzato. Richard P. Rogers (1944-2001) was an experimental filmmaker, a documentary filmmaker who spent his life recording himself in the hope that one day a coherent self-portrait would emerge. This did not happen during his lifetime, as Rogers died of cancer in 2001. But his former student and friend Alexander Olchs, with the help of Rogers' wife Susan Meiselas, completed the work that Rogers, paralysed by fear of indulging in his own narcissism, had only sketched out. "The Windmill Movie" is a stirring 'autobiography by proxy' drawn from 200 hours of footage shot by Rogers and his father, much of it narrated by Rogers himself or by Olchs reading from a script written in Rogers' own voice. The problems of the protagonist's life revolve around a series of dualities: his affluent WASP upbringing in the Hamptons and his avant-garde professional interests; his stable relationship with Susan and his complicated relationship with another woman; the recurrent attempts to translate his life into film through both fiction and non-fiction.
