Abstract: La regista torna nella terra che i suoi bisnonni hanno lasciato più di 100 anni fa, per sentire cosa significa essere un'immigrata. Questo ciclo di 6 film riflette questo viaggio. "Quando ho fatto un film, diversi anni fa, che ritraeva criticamente gli immigrati negli Stati Uniti, mi è stato suggerito che non avevo idea di cosa fosse l'esperienza degli immigrati, non avendola vissuta io stessa. Così, ho deciso di ricreare il viaggio dell'immigrazione dei miei bisnonni in America cento anni fa, al contrario. Mi sono trasferito in un piccolo villaggio vicino alla città ucraina di Uman. Questa serie di film riflette l'elasticità del tempo che ho trovato lì, con gli abitanti del villaggio che vivono più o meno come quando la mia famiglia è partita. "Kalendar" (10') parte dal concetto di acquisizione del linguaggio e illustra il significato dei mesi dell'anno, nel calendario ucraino, con immagini del mondo naturale. "Clay" (15') traccia una connessione tra il rapporto del popolo Trypillian (ca. 3000 a.C.) con l'argilla e la terra e il rapporto degli attuali lavoratori delle fabbriche di mattoni con questo stesso materiale. "On This Day" (4') esamina il mio rapporto personale con il soggetto, e rivela un segreto che avevo tenuto nascosto durante la realizzazione del film. "Unnamed Film" (55') - l'opera centrale del ciclo - inquadra e tiene insieme gli altri film del ciclo, ritraendo il villaggio, i suoi abitanti e il loro rapporto con me come regista". The filmmaker returns to the land her great grandparents left over 100 years ago, in order to feel what it is to be an immigrant. This cycle of 6 films reflects that journey. "When I made a film, several years ago, which critically portrayed immigrants in the United States, it was suggested to me that I had no idea of what the immigrant experience was, not having experienced it myself. So, I decided to recreate the journey of my great grandparents’ immigration to America one hundred years ago, in reverse. I moved to a small village near the Ukrainian city of Uman. This series of films reflects the elasticity of time that I found there, with villagers living much as they did when my family left. "Kalendar" (10') starts with the concept of language acquisition and illustrates the meaning of the months of the year in the Ukrainian calendar with images from the natural world. "Clay" (15') draws a connection between the relationship of the Trypillian people (ca. 3000 BC) to the clay and soil and the relationship of present day brick factory workers to this same material. "On This Day" (4') examines my personal relationship to the subject, and reveals a secret I had kept hidden during the making of the film. "Unnamed Film" (55'), the central work of the cycle, frames and holds together the other films of the cycle, portraying the village, its inhabitants and their relationship to me as a filmmaker".
