Abstract: "In che modo l'India, con la sua ricca cultura e la sua tradizione millenaria, affronta oggi le sue immense necessità? Per i 500 milioni (e anche più) di giovani indiani under 25, sembrerebbe che la tradizione non abbia più un gran peso e che essi appartengano già al mondo della globalizzazione. Guardano al mondo esterno; non vogliono essere diversi dai giovani del resto del mondo. Jeans, fast-food e I-pod fanno parte della loro vita. Tuttavia se una nuova dinamica spinge l’India verso un futuro incerto, le contraddizioni sussistono. Nuove chiese, nuove moschee, nuovi templi e bei salotti spuntano dappertutto. Le donne che un tempo quasi nude portavano fascine di legna oggi sono vestite come star di film. Le cartoline di un’India passata stanno lentamente scomparendo dalle nostre memorie. Ma i problemi restano gli stessi, tra tutti il più cruciale: l’acqua. Questo è ciò che mi ha spinto in questa avventura, una nuova visita ai posti che ho filmato per la mia serie di film sui "cinque elementi". Il viaggio intrapreso per ritrovare quei luoghi non è affatto nostalgico, ma raggruppa le osservazioni di un filmmaker su quel vasto territorio che è l’India oggi" (Velu Viswanadhan). Poeta e viaggiatore, Velu Viswanadhan sottopone l’India al vaglio del suo sguardo carico di misticismo. A guidarlo è la passione per la natura e per la terra indiana. "Retour aux éléments"è innanzitutto la presa d’atto che un luogo è uno spazio costituito da presenze. Laddove altri vedono dettagli politici, sociali, culturali, Viswanadhan filma persone che agiscono in un ambiente, non secondo la modalità oppositiva, tipica del pensiero occidentale, ma in una dinamica che include l’uomo nel contesto. Forse per questo è così attratto dall’acqua e dall’atto d’immergersi. Film di viaggio e di osservazione, senza parole ma dotato di una precisa progressione, "Retour aux éléments" rappresenta un unicum nel quadro contemporaneo: uno sguardo prestato ad un’anima in movimento, che è riuscita a fare a meno di incarnarsi in un’identità.
“How does India, with its rich culture and its thousand year old traditions, face up to its immense needs today? For the 500 million or more young Indians who are under 25 years old, it would seem that tradition no longer carries so much weight and that they already belong to the world of globalisation. They look towards the outside world; they don’t want to be different to other young people around the rest of the world. Jeans, fast food, and I-pods are now part of their daily life. But if a new dynamic is propelling India towards an uncertain future, the contradictions persist. New churches, new mosques, new temples and beauty parlours are springing up everywhere in the villages and elsewhere. The tribal women who once carried bundles of firewood, almost naked, are today clad in long dresses, like film stars. The postcard images of India are slowly being wiped from our memories. But the problems remain the same, notably one crucial one; water. This is what summons me back for a new adventure, a new visit to the places I filmed for the "Five Elements". The route taken to revisit these places will under no circumstances be a sentimental or nostalgic journey, but a filmmaker’s observations of this vast territory that is the India of today.” (Velu Viswanadhan) Poet and traveller, Velu Viswanadhan closely examines India with a richly mystic eye. Guiding him is a passion for nature and the Indian landscape. Above all else, "Back to the Elements" acts under the belief that a place is inhabite by presences. Where others see political, social or cultural details, Viswanadhan films people as they act in an environment, not according to the typical conditions of Western thought, but rather in a dynamic that puts man in context. Perhaps that’s why he is so attracted to water and the act of immersion. A film about travelling and observing, silent yet with deliberate progress, "Back to the Elements" is an exceptional film within a contemporary framework, its gaze invested with a spirit in motion, which has succeeded in eschewing an identifiable incarnation.
