Abstract: Nel 1979 Chris Petit esordì con il suo primo film, "Radio On", un intenso road movie capace di catturare lo spirito di una Gran Bretagna che si stava lentamente scoprendo thatcheriana. A trent’anni di distanza, Petit riavvia l’auto "ferma al bordo del futuro" e riprende il viaggio. Dall’interno dell’auto, l’ultimo baluardo della privacy perduta, si percorre un paesaggio fatto di container e centri commerciali, luoghi assoluti che hanno estromesso la presenza umana. Dalla prospettiva di un finestrino scorre "un sogno di pietra in un’isola di cemento". Lungo la Westway si dipana "un road movie in cui non incontri nessuno". Si tratta di un viaggio senza meta, un divagare ipnotico e meditativo che si sofferma sulle memorie perdute, sul senso della paternità e l’infanzia, sull’impatto delle nuove tecnologie, sull’estendersi di fabbriche impersonali. Un viaggio in un futuro che si è affermato sulla base di un passato inesistente. "Content"è un flusso di immagini e pensieri, profondi e frammentari, proprio come quelli che ci sorprendono alla guida di un auto che percorre indolente il mondo. Pensieri che, senza giudicare, vanno dritti al cuore delle contraddizioni emozionali del nostro tempo. Basato sui testi di Ian Penman affidati alla voce di Hanns Zischler e ispirato dalla musica elettronica di Antye Greie, "Content"è uno spiazzante film dallo stile non narrativo. “La crisi più grande ha a che fare con la morte del contenuto: allora ecco il titolo. Questa crisi è in parte un risultato dell’accelerazione delle nuove tecnologie. L’esempio più ovvio si trova nella diffusa lamentela per il fatto che tutto si stia banalizzando. Realizzare un film nel 2009 significava per me che la trama non dovesse essere necessariamente lineare – il viaggio potrebbe arrivare da qualsiasi parte – e che in un mondo virtuale non fosse più necessario incontrare gli altri. Inoltre con lo sviluppo della camera a mano, è possibile realizzare film come quando si scrive un libro: la "caméra stylo". È possibile essere più attenti”. (C. Petit)
In 1979, Chris Petit made his debut with the film "Radio On", an intense road movie that captured the spirit of Great Britain as it was slowly turning Thatcher. Thirty years later, Petit restarts his car "stalled on the edge of the future" and picks up where his last voyage ended. The car, the last bastion of lost privacy, passes by a landscape of containers and shopping malls that has driven out any sign of humans. From the window there rolls by "a stone dream in a concrete island". Along the Westway unwinds "a road movie in which you don’t meet anyone". This is a trip without a destination, a hypnotic, meditative ramble about things past, the meaning of childhood, the impact of technology, the expansion of impersonal warehouses. A trip into the future that is based around a non-existent past. "Content" is an outpouring of images and ideas, profound and fragmentary, the kind that startle a driver as he passes the world indolently by. Without casting judgments, the ideas go straight to the heart of the emotional crisis of our time. Based on the writings of Ian Penman and narrated by Hanns Zischler, inspired by the electronic music of Antye Greie, "Content" is a thrilling, nonlinear film. “The wider crisis is to do with the death of content: hence our title. This crisis is in part a result of the general acceleration resulting from new technology. The most obvious example can be seen in the widespread complaint about everything becoming dumbed down. Making a film in 2009 it seemed to me that plots no longer needed to be linear – the journey could go anywhere – and in a virtual world it was no longer necessary to meet others. Also, with the development of the handycam it’s possible to make films much more as though one were writing: the "caméra stylo". It’s possible to be more thoughtful.” (C. Petit)
