Abstract: Milltown è situata nella parte occidentale e forestale dello stato del Montana. Le sue origini risiedono nelle enormi segherie che per prime hanno alimentato l’economia locale. In seguito la lavorazione del legname è stata sfruttata per ampliare ulteriormente l’impero minerario di Marcus Daly. Apparentemente distaccata, la macchina da presa si cala in realtà nel tessuto delle cose intorno alla quale ruota la vita della cittadina. Dalle escavazioni minerarie ai bar dove la gente si ritrova la sera, il film compone un silenzioso affresco sociale che pone in relazione il ritmo della produzione industriale con quello di una vita identica a se stessa e ancorata ai propri riti. Allo stesso tempo il film è anche la testimonianza di come un territorio maestoso è stato nel corso del tempo sfregiato dall’uomo. “Come bambino nato nell’area della Ruhr e cittadino di Mülheim, Germania, mi pongo una domanda: cosa verrà dopo l’era dell’industrializzazione? Cosa accadrà all’accelerazione scatenata dalle trasformazioni tecnologiche? Nel film non ci sono gerarchie fra oggetti, luoghi e persone. Sono trattati tutti allo stesso modo e osservati in virtù del loro ritmo e dei loro gesti. Per questo motivo nei miei film non ci sono protagonisti ma solo relazioni”. (R. Komers)
Milltown is located in the wooded, western part of Montana. It dates back to the large sawmill industry that first gave life to the local economy. Then lumber-work was exploited to further amplify the mining empire of Marcus Daly. Casting about in a seemingly detached manner, the camera actually weaves together what makes life tick in the little city. From the mines to the bars, the film creates a silent portrait of society, pairing the rhythms of industry with those of people’s ordinary, ritualistic lives. At the same time, the film is also testimony to how a majestic landscape has been disfigured by man over time. “As a child from the Ruhr, and a resident of Mülheim, Germany, I asked myself what will come after industrialization? How will life go on and what will happen at the amazing rate of technological changes? In the film there’s no hierarchy between objects, people and place. Everything is treated the same and observed according to its rhythm and movements. That’s why there are no protagonists in my films, just relationships.” (R. Komers)
