Abstract: Il sorprendente debutto di Ben Russell, un film che allo stesso tempo partecipa e smantella l'etnografia tradizionale, sceglie il mistero e la bellezza naturale rispetto all'annotazione e all'artificio, e impiega la narrazione non convenzionale come mezzo per la memoria storica. Opera rigorosa con una struttura allo stesso tempo definita e tortuosa, il film descrive il lungo viaggio di due fratelli che si avventurano dalla periferia di Paramaribo, Suriname, via terra e attraverso le rapide, oltrepassando un villaggio Maroon sul fiume Suriname superiore, sulle orme del viaggio intrapreso dai loro antenati che, 300 anni prima, fuggirono dalla schiavitů degli olandesi. Ben Russell's astonishing debut, a film that both participates in and dismantles traditional ethnography, chooses mystery and natural beauty over annotation and artifice, and employs unconventional storytelling as a means to historical memory. A rigorous work with a structure that is both defined and tortuous, the film describes the long journey of two brothers who venture from the outskirts of Paramaribo, Suriname, overland and through the rapids, past a Maroon village on the upper Suriname River, in the footsteps of the journey undertaken by their ancestors who, 300 years earlier, fled from slavery by the Dutch. The film follows the two protagonists along dirt tracks, on a crowded and rickety bus, through illegal gold mines and urban traffic, through the jungle and on a speedboat, finally coming across a ritual scene in which reality defies cinematic mise-en-scčne.
