What they achieved goes beyond the specialist boundaries of linguistics and literary criticism. The twists and turns that punctuated their lives could serve as the inspiration for an action novel or an adventure film. Their friendship was born in an instant, but their quarrels lasted more than half a century. At the end of their lives, they had to answer a specific question: what were they to each other?
