Abstract: Interprete simultaneo brillante e promettente, il russo Cotonov ha un improvviso cedimento durante un summit tra Gorbaciov e Reagan che si sta svolgendo a Ginevra. E da quel momento scompare. Sulle tracce di questa storia minima, Andreas Fontana costruisce un racconto in forma di detection, dove non si dà la soluzione, ma si mettono in campo vari elementi: la testimonianza di un insegnante del giovane, le immagini d’archivio dell’incontro, un’interprete (donna) che traduce le parole detta del professore. Al centro, come un mistero inarrivabile, la figura di Cotonov, immagine di un equilibrio instabile e sospeso sull’abisso, come lo è ogni forma di comunicazione. “Avendo lavorato io stesso come interprete per diversi anni, conoscevo l’universo di questo mestiere difficile ed anonimo. Ma raccontare la storia di Cotonov, era anche parlare del valore delle immagini d’archivio: le immagini possono valere come prova? E se sì, dicono sempre la verità?”. (A. Fontana) Strutturato come un’opera aperta, che si filma nel suo farsi, "Cotonov Vanished" oltrepassa il quadro del suo soggetto per porsi come riflessione a tutto campo sul potere delle immagini e sulla loro indefinibile fragilità.
A brilliant, promising interpreter, the Russian Cotonov has a sudden breakdown during a Geneva summit where Gorbachev meets Reagan. After then, he suddenly vanishes. Out of this scant material, Andreas Fontana builds a detective story in which the solution is never given, yet various evidence is put forward: the testimony of a former professor, archival footage of the meeting, a female interpreter who translates for the professor. At the story’s center lies the unsolved mystery of Cotonov, the very image of instability over an abyss, as are all forms of communication. “Having worked as an interpreter for many years myself, I knew the world of this difficult, anonymous career. But telling the story of Cotonov also meant talking about the value of archival footage. Can images count as evidence? And if so, do they always tell the truth?” (A. Fontana) Structured like an open work, filming as it went, "Cotonov Vanished" goes beyond the portrait of its subject to reflect on the power of images and their indefinable fragility.
