Abstract: "Volevo mostrare perché questo paese è così". La regista ungherese Lívia Gyarmathy (1932- ) ha fatto di questa intenzione personale il leitmotiv stimolante dei suoi film sull'Ungheria socialista. Nel 1961, dopo aver terminato gli studi di chimica e impiegata come operaia specializzata in una fabbrica, è la prima donna a iscriversi al corso di regia all'Accademia ungherese per l'arte teatrale e cinematografica. Nonostante i pregiudizi dei professori e dei compagni di corso, realizza una serie di film documentari e film a soggetto che si distinguono per il loro realismo sociale. La Gyarmathy esprime i suoi dubbi sul sistema socialista attraverso storie personali, a causa delle quali viene ripetutamente presa di mira dalla censura. Per esempio, è stata la prima ad affrontare il tema della droga nel suo documentario "Kilencedik emelet" ("Ninth Floor", 1977). L'invito del film al Festival di Oberhausen, in Germania, migliorò le cose con la censura. 'I wanted to show why this country is the way it is'. Hungarian director Lívia Gyarmathy (1932 - ) made this personal intention the inspiring leitmotif of her films about socialist Hungary. In 1961, after finishing her studies in chemistry and working as a skilled worker in a factory, she was the first woman to enrol in the directing course at the Hungarian Academy for Theatre and Film Art. Despite the prejudices of her professors and fellow students, she made a series of documentary and feature films that stood out for their social realism. Gyarmathy expresses her doubts about the socialist system through personal stories, because of which she is repeatedly targeted by censors. For example, she was the first to tackle the subject of drugs in her documentary 'Kilencedik emelet' ('Ninth Floor', 1977). The film's invitation to the Oberhausen Festival in Germany improved things with the censors. Shortly before the fall of the Iron Curtain, Lívia Gyarmathy made a three-part documentary on the labour camp of 'Recsk' (1988), another sensitive topic in Hungary's history.
