Abstract: Sulle magiche rive del lago Bunyoni, in Uganda, le donne si adoperano per garantire la sopravvivenza all'intera famiglia e dare un futuro dignitoso ai numerosi figli. Per le donne senza istruzione, il matrimonio precoce - e infelice - è un destino certo. Secondo la divisione del lavoro in uso presso i Bakiga, etnia di provenienza della popolazione locale, il lavoro nei campi spetta alle donne mentre compito dell'uomo è pulire la macchia e costruire le capanne con la paglia. Oggi, il numero degli uomini risulta esuberante per assolvere tali compiti e solo le donne interagiscono quotidianamente con il territorio. Con la scarsa quantità di terra a disposizione per ogni famiglia e la mediocre fertilità del suolo, l'agricoltura è appena sufficiente alla sussistenza alimentare. Per mandare a scuola i figli e provvedere all'acquisto di alcuni beni di necessità, sempre più donne ricorrono all'artigianato, dal momento che esistono associazioni a sostenerle e a metterle in contatto con il mercato. L'artigianato potrebbe in futuro divenire una rete di sicurezza più solida per le donne e i loro figli. Nel frattempo, dà alle donne l'opportunità di esplorare la propria creatività, a lungo repressa dalla società, e creare reti sociali attraverso le quali uscire dall'isolamento e condividere esperienze in uno spirito di solidarietà.
On the magical shores of Lake Bunyoni in Uganda, women strive to ensure the survival of their entire family and give their many children a decent future. For uneducated women, early - and unhappy - marriage is a certain fate. According to the division of labour in use among the Bakiga, the ethnic origin of the local population, women do the work in the fields while men clean the bush and build huts out of straw. Today, there are too many men to carry out these tasks and only women interact with the land on a daily basis. With the small amount of land available to each family and the mediocre fertility of the soil, agriculture is barely sufficient for food subsistence. In order to send their children to school and provide for the purchase of certain necessities, more and more women are resorting to handicrafts, since there are associations to support them and put them in contact with the market. Handicrafts could become a stronger safety net for women and their children in the future. In the meantime, it gives women the opportunity to explore their creativity, long repressed by society, and to create social networks through which they can break out of isolation and share experiences in a spirit of solidarity.
