Abstract: Un ricordo del 1989, l'anno in cui sono stato quasi ucciso. Non mi sento fortunato per la mia sopravvivenza, ma provo un forte sentimento di tristezza a causa della mia incapacità di fare qualcosa di fronte alla morte. Per un periodo di tempo abbastanza lungo, ho indugiato tra il cercare di dimenticare e il ricordare, finché non ho riguardando le foto che avevo scattato quell'anno. Allora ho cominciato a chiedere ai passanti, mostrando loro le foto e sperando che qualcuno di loro potesse dirmi la verità. Sono arrivato fin sui luoghi della tragedia, sempre con quelle foto in mano, ma alla fine non è cambiato nulla. Sono passati vent'anni. I capelli della madre sono diventati grigi; i cari hanno asciugato le lacrime. Eppure quella foto che ritrae un giovane studente in Piazza Tienanmen che fronteggia da solo un intera divisione di carri armati è conosciuta in tutto il mondo.
A memory of 1989, the year I was almost killed. I don't feel lucky that I survived, but I feel a strong sense of sadness because of my inability to do anything in the face of death. For quite a long time, I wavered between trying to forget and remembering, until I looked back at the photos I had taken that year Then I started asking passers-by, showing them the photos and hoping that one of them could tell me the truth. I went all the way to the sites of the tragedy, always with those photos in my hand, but in the end nothing changed. Twenty years have passed. The mother's hair has turned grey; the loved ones have wiped away their tears. Yet that photo of a young student in Tiananmen Square facing an entire tank division alone is known the world over.
