Abstract: Questo documentario esplora le risonanze artistiche, musicali e letterarie del mito della strada - specialmente dell'andare fuori dai sentieri battuti - nella tradizione americana: l'espansione verso Ovest, l'era della Dust Bowl, i vagabondi, la suburbanizzazione del dopoguerra e la critica dei Beat, l'autostop, gli sconvolgimenti degli anni '60 e dei primi anni '70, l'attuale generazione di backpackers che stringono tra le mani copie sdrucite di "Lonely Planet" e di "Rough Guides". Dall'iconografia della frontiera rappresentata nei film di John Ford agli itinerari di attraversamento degli Stati Uniti in rent-a-car, la strada americana ha ispirato poesia, arte, musica popolare, romanzieri e drammaturghi. La pietra di paragone è l'ideale egualitario espresso dal poeta Walt Whitman che ha successivamente ispirato Woody Guthrie e i meandri propositivi di Jack Kerouac e dei suoi soci trasandati. Questo film è un'esplorazione di quella lunga e fertile tradizione. La strada è una realtà fisica ma è anche metafora della trasformazione personale e nazionale.
This documentary explores the artistic, musical, and literary resonances of the myth of the road - especially going off the beaten path - in the American tradition: westward expansion, the Dust Bowl era, hobos, postwar suburbanization and Beat criticism, hitchhiking, the upheavals of the 1960s and early 1970s, and today's generation of backpackers clutching tattered copies of Lonely Planet and Rough Guides. From the iconography of the frontier depicted in John Ford's films to the routes across the United States by rent-a-car, the American road has inspired poetry, art, popular music, novelists and playwrights. The touchstone is the egalitarian ideal expressed by poet Walt Whitman, which later inspired Woody Guthrie and the purposeful meanderings of Jack Kerouac and his scruffy associates. This film is an exploration of that long and fertile tradition. The street is a physical reality but it is also a metaphor for personal and national transformation.
