Abstract: Celebre designer, lo svizzero Herbert Matter (1907-1984) ha il merito di aver esteso l'uso della fotografia come strumento di design e di aver portato la semantica delle belle arti nel regno delle arti applicate. Ispirato dai costruttivisti russi e istruito da artisti come Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier e A. M. Cassandre nella Parigi degli anni '20, Matter ha disegnato una serie di manifesti di viaggio svizzeri d'avanguardia che hanno riscosso il plauso internazionale per l'suo uso pionieristico del foto-montaggio, combinato con i caratteri grafici. Sempre in equilibrio tra i progetti di belle arti e il lavoro commerciale, il taciturno designer ha trovato il suo linguaggio unico, che ha portato alla creazione di opere iconiche.
Famous designer, the Swiss Herbert Matter (1907 - 1984) is credited with extending the use of photography as a design tool and bringing the semantics of fine art into the realm of applied arts. Inspired by the Russian Constructivists and instructed by artists such as Fernand Léger, Le Corbusier and A. M. Cassandre in the Paris of the 1920s, Matter designed a series of avant-garde Swiss travel posters that won international acclaim for his pioneering use of photo-montage combined with graphic characters. Always balancing fine art projects and commercial work, the taciturn designer found his own unique language, which led to the creation of iconic works.
