Abstract: All'inizio del XX secolo, il Giappone ha condotto una serie di guerre durante le quali sono state commesse atrocità paragonabili a quelle commesse dai nazisti. Nel 1998 è stato pubblicato negli Stati Uniti "Zen at War", libro che descrive in modo dettagliato come i monaci buddisti parteciparono attivamente a queste guerre. Non solo hanno combattuto, ma hanno anche donato soldi e materiali per costruire aerei da combattimento. In questo film che mantiene lo stesso titolo del saggio, alcuni monaci buddisti Zen giapponesi parlano per la prima volta delle famigerate gesta dei loro predecessori. At the beginning of the 20th century, Japan waged a series of wars during which atrocities comparable to those committed by the Nazis were committed. The revelation of this unspoken reality came about through the initiative of Ina Buitendijk, whose husband suffered severely as a result of his internment in a Japanese camp. As a Buddhist she wrote many letters to the monasteries asking how it was possible that Zen monks were involved in the war. The Zen masters decided to grant her request.
