Abstract: Joey Arias è un'istituzione di New York. Ha vissuto e lavorato con il leggendario musicista Klaus Nomi fino alla morte di quest'ultimo, avvenuta nel 1983. Tuttavia, Arias è uscito dall'ombra di Nomi per affermarsi come performer solista, cantante di cabaret e drag artist. Il burattinaio newyorkese Basil Twist è altrettanto popolare nel suo genere. La sua interpretazione della "Symphonie fantastique" di Hector Berlioz realizzata con marionette a grandezza naturale ed eseguita sott'acqua è ampiamente considerata come tra le più significative realizzazione di questa forma d'arte. "Arias with a Twist"è il titolo del progetto creato da questi due artisti. Una scintillante fantasia scenica che, dall'estate del 2008, incanta il pubblico sia a New York che sulla costa occidentale degli Stati Uniti. Questo documentario descrive l'evoluzione e la realizzazione del progetto. Le riprese originali sono affiancate da materiale d'archivio che mostrano i precursori di "Arias with a Twist", come i film di Andy Warhol, le opere di Jim Henson e di Keith Haring, insieme ad estratti di film con David Bowie, Divine, Grace Jones e Klaus Nomi.
Joey Arias is a New York institution. He lived and worked with legendary musician Klaus Nomi until his death in 1983. However, Arias stepped out of Nomi's shadow to establish himself as a solo performer, cabaret singer and drag artist. New York puppeteer Basil Twist is equally popular in his own right. His interpretation of Hector Berlioz's 'Symphonie fantastique' with life-size puppets and performed underwater is widely regarded as one of the most significant achievements of this art form. "Arias with a Twist' is the title of the project created by these two artists. A sparkling scenic fantasy that has been enchanting audiences both in New York and on the West Coast of the United States since the summer of 2008. This documentary describes the evolution and realisation of the project. Original footage is accompanied by archive material showing the precursors of "Arias with a Twist", such as Andy Warhol's films, Jim Henson's and Keith Haring's works, together with extracts from films with David Bowie, Divine, Grace Jones and Klaus Nomi.
