Abstract: Disegni, fotografie, materiale televisivo danno voce a Claudiu Crulic, giovane immigrato rumeno accusato del furto di un portafoglio e morto nelle prigioni di Cracovia dopo un lungo sciopero della fame. Non è la prima volta che al cinema un defunto racconta la propria storia, ma stavolta il racconto è più vero del vero, perché consapevole della propria impossibilità di essere: l’animazione dà volto ai ricordi di Crulic, che, ormai pacificato, recupera immagini della propria vita, dall’infanzia al decesso. Quando possibile, si aiuta con fotografie o con altro materiale reale, altrimenti lascia che le animazioni, mutando di tecnica e di stile (disegno a mano, collage, stop motion, cut&cut), illustrino le sue emozioni. “La storia di Crulic mi ha sempre affascinata, in particolare la sua morte: mentre, giorno dopo giorno, il suo corpo abbandonava questo mondo, la sua anima resisteva. L’animazione mi ha permesso di rappresentare tale abisso.” (A. Damian) L’ironia è la chiave del racconto, quasi che Crulic, dall’aldilà, abbia ormai preso atto dell’assurdità della propria vicenda: un biglietto del bus, timbrato in Italia al momento del furto, se ritrovato, avrebbe potuto salvargli la vita. Un documentario capace di dar forma ad una vicenda attuale attraverso la memoria del protagonista, cui presta la voce l’attore rumeno Vlad Ivanov.
Drawings, photos and television material give voice to Claudiu Crulic, a young Romanian immigrant who was accused of having stolen a wallet and who died in the prisons of Krakow after a long hunger strike. This is not the first film in which a dead person tells his/her own story, but this time the story is more real than reality, because of the awareness of its impossibility to exist: animation portrays the memories of Crulic, who, now at peace, recalls images of his life, from childhood to death. Whenever possible, he does so with the help of photos or of other real material; otherwise, he lets animation illustrate his feelings with different techniques and styles (hand drawings, collage, stop motion, cut&cut). “Claudiu Crulic’s story has always fascinated me, especially his death: he could see his body leaving this world with each passing day, while his soul was still there. The idea of doing an animation allowed me to represent this abyss.” (A. Damian) Irony is the key to the story, almost as if in the afterlife Crulic had now understood the absurdity of his case: if found, a bus ticket stamped in Italy at the time of theft could have saved his life. This documentary vividly portrays a recent case through the memories of its protagonist, whose voice in the film is the one of Romanian actor Vlad Ivanov.
