Abstract: Irma è un anziana luchadora che reca sul suo corpo i segni di una vita trascorsa a battersi e a eseguire manovre pericolosissime. Diva del ring, nel corso della sua carriera ha vinto numerosi premi, è stata corteggiata e, alla fine, ha dovuto cedere il passo all’età. Eppure la memoria dei giorni di gloria non tramonta. Ogni giorno si reca in palestra dove ripassa le mosse che l’hanno resa una star adorata dal pubblico. Ma il corpo non è più quello di una volta. I movimenti sono precisi, ma legnosi e lenti. Incalzata dal regista, Irma rivela che nella sua vita non ha fatto solo la lottatrice. Irma è stata anche cantante di un certo successo. Tra l’anziana lottatrice e il giovane regista s’instaura così una tenera complicità nella quale la donna vede nel ragazzo il precipitato di tutte le platee che l’hanno applaudita e amata. Fairbanks, dal canto suo, osserva con occhio partecipe il corpo e la voce della donna, cogliendola negli spazi della sua nuova vita, lontana dall’entusiasmo delle folle e dalle scariche di adrenalina del ring. Come una guerriera a riposo, Irma non si lascia andare solo ai ricordi, ma riafferma con orgoglio le ragioni che l’hanno spronata per tutta la vita.
Irma is an old «luchadora» (female wrestler) who bears the marks of a life spent battling in the ring, performing daredevil moves. A diva in the ring, over the course of her career she won many prizes, was feted, and finally, conceding her age. Yet her memories of the glory days have not faded. Every day she goes to the gym to brush up on the moves that made her a star. But her body isn’t what it once was. Her movements, though precise, are stiff and slow. Urged on by the director, Irma admits she wasn’t only a fighter. Once Irma was also a successful singer too. A tender bond forms between the young director and old fighter; the woman sees in the young man the crowds who once applauded and loved her. For his part, Fairbanks observes with a complicit eye the body and voice of a woman, depicting her in her new life’s arena, far from the enthusiastic crowds and the adrenaline of the ring. Like a warrior at rest, Irma does not only give vent to her memories, but proudly reaffirms the reasons that have spurred her on her whole life.
