Abstract: Quando Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009) incontrò i Nambikwara nel 1938, credette di aver incontrato un popolo che incarnava una forma essenziale di umanità. Questa "società della natura" era quella in cui la libertà personale andava di pari passo con un rapporto sano con l'ambiente. L'incontro ha dato origine ai passaggi più poetici del libro di memorie di Lévi-Strauss, "Tristes Tropiques" (1955), dove l'autore ci racconta (nel film, attraverso la voce di Jean-Claude Carrière) la vita spensierata dei bambini e il rispetto che viene loro mostrato dai genitori, i modi amorevoli del popolo e la malinconia che ispira i loro sogni ad occhi aperti, le ambiguità della loro vita spirituale. Settant'anni dopo la visita di Lévi-Strauss, il film di Fortaleza Flores intreccia passato e presente rivisitando gli indiani con cui l'antropologo ha vissuto, rivelando immagini che si trovano ancora tra loro e che evocano ciò che l'antropologo potrebbe aver visto.
When Claude Lévi-Strauss (1908-2009) met the Nambikwara in 1938, he believed he had encountered a people who embodied an essential form of humanity. This 'society of nature' was one in which personal freedom went hand in hand with a healthy relationship with the environment. The encounter gave rise to the most poetic passages of Lévi-Strauss's memoir, 'Tristes Tropiques' (1955), where the author tells us (in the film, through the voice of Jean-Claude Carrière) about the carefree life of the children and the respect shown to them by their parents, the loving ways of the people and the melancholy that inspires their daydreams, the ambiguities of their spiritual life. Seventy years after Lévi-Strauss's visit, Fortaleza Flores's film interweaves past and present by revisiting the Indians with whom the anthropologist lived, revealing images that are still among them and that evoke what the anthropologist might have seen.
