Abstract: In Senegal, la figura del marabutto (santo la cui tomba č oggetto di culto popolare) č onnipresente. Nei taxi, nelle strade, all'interno delle case, le immagini di questi santi proteggono i fedeli. Al di lą dell'aspetto spirituale, l'influenza delle confraternite di marabutti si manifesta a livello politico, economico e sociale. Nei paesi musulmani, molti tentativi di legittimare le confraternite religiose sono falliti: repressione del governo, clandestinitą, o guerra civile come in Algeria. Attraverso il ritratto di un contadino e di un parrucchiere, membri della confraternita mouride, e di un giornalista, il film si interroga proprio sullo sviluppo delle confraternite nella societą senegalese a partire dalla colonizzazione francese. Si interroga anche sul potere che esercitano sui propri fedeli.
In Senegal, the figure of the marabout (a saint whose tomb is the object of popular worship) is omnipresent. In taxis, on the streets, inside homes, images of these saints protect the faithful. Beyond the spiritual aspect, the influence of the brotherhoods of marabouts manifests itself on a political, economic and social level. In Muslim countries, many attempts to legitimise religious brotherhoods have failed: government repression, hiding, or civil war as in Algeria. Through the portrait of a farmer and a hairdresser, members of the Mouride brotherhood, and a journalist, the film questions precisely the development of the brotherhoods in Senegalese society since French colonisation. It also questions the power they wield over their faithful.
