Abstract: Si dice che i marinai abbiano una ragazza in ogni porto: alla prova dei fatti, questo modo di dire assume un drammatico significato. Fino al 1992, Subic Bay, zona portuale di Olongapo City, nelle Filippine, era la più grande base navale USA fuori dai confini statunitensi. Per molte donne del luogo non c’erano alternative a prostituirsi nei locali notturni frequentati dai marinai in libera uscita. Il risultato è una generazione di 50.000 amerasiatici, frutto di relazioni bruscamente interrotte col rientro in patria della flotta. Abbandonati alla nascita, cresciuti nell’indigenza, emarginati dalla società a causa di una "diversità" evidente nei tratti somatici, questi giovani vivono oggi un’esistenza difficile: dibattuti tra affermazione di sé e sentimenti contrastanti nei confronti di un padre che vive lontano, incurante delle loro esigenze affettive ed economiche. Il film, scandito dall’alternarsi delle stagioni monsoniche, segue per due anni le vite di quattro di loro: Robert presta assistenza a chi sta tentando di rintracciare il padre naturale tramite internet; JR è pericolosamente coinvolto in una gang locale; Charlene si iscrive ad un concorso di bellezza in cerca di conferme sul suo aspetto; per Margarita, amerasiatica di seconda generazione, si tratta di abbandonare la vita di strada ed accettare l’inserimento in un centro di assistenza. Tutti devono fare i conti con le proprie origini per continuare a scrivere il proprio futuro. “Ci ha subito impressionato il fatto che gli amerasiatici fossero il risultato vivente di alcune logiche internazionali. Esseri umani che pagano sulla (nella) propria pelle le conseguenze di strategie politiche, militari ed economiche globali. Arrivati nelle Filippine, abbiamo incontrato le persone. They say sailors have a girl in every port; put to the test, this expression assumes a dramatic light. Since 1992, Subic Bay, the port area of Olongapo City in the Philippines, was the largest US naval base outside the United States. Many women had no alternative but to become prostitutes in the nightclubs frequented by offduty soldiers. The result is a generation of 50,000 Asian-Americans, the fruit of brief encounters cut short when the fleet returned home. Abandoned at birth, born into poverty, marginalized by their evident physical "differences", these youth live painful lives today: caught between self-affirmation and conflicting feelings about their far-off fathers who remain indifferent to their emotional and financial needs. For two years the film, shot in alternate monsoon seasons, follows the lives of four such youth: Robert helps those trying to find their natural father online; JR is dangerously mixed up with a local gang; Charlene signs up for beauty school to feel positive about her looks; Margarita, a second generation Asian-American, wants to get off the streets and check into a shelter. Each must reckon with her origins in order to write the future. “We were immediately struck by the fact that Asian Americans might be the living result of international affairs, human beings who pay the price of political, military and global economic strategies with (or in) their skin.
