Abstract: Questo breve film documenta l’installazione dell’opera Personnes nell’immenso padiglione del Grand Palais di Parigi, in occasione della rassegna Monumenta 2010. “Non appena ho saputo che Christian Boltanski avrebbe collocato 60 tonnellate di abiti usati dentro il Grand Palais per ricordare le vite di coloro che li hanno indossati, di cui essi costituiscono i resti terreni, ho capito che volevo fare un piccolo film che ce lo mostrasse all’opera. "Deus ex Boltanski"è quel piccolo film. Il dio in questione è quel braccio meccanico rosso che acchiappa i vestiti e li deposita su un’immensa pila di altri abiti. Visitando quello che ha realizzato è possibile udire il suono del battito di un cuore”. (R. Gardner) Il primo incontro tra Robert Gardner e Christian Boltanski risale agli anni settanta e l’ammirazione reciproca tra il cineasta e l’artista è tuttora ben salda. Boltanski confida a Gardner le incertezze che presiedono alla creazione artistica, soprattutto quando si realizzano opere di dimensioni monumentali, che sfuggono al «controllo totale» in quanto realizzate insieme a decine di collaboratori. Lo stesso creatore ammette di provare grande curiosità per il risultato finale.
This short film documents the installation of "Personnes" in the large pavilion of Paris’s Grand Palais for the 2010 Monumenta exhibition. “As soon as I heard that Christian Boltanski was going to put a 60 ton display of used clothes into the Grand Palais to recall the lives of which they were the intimate remnants, I knew I wanted to make a little film of him doing it. "Deus ex Boltanski" is that little film. The Deus is the clattering red claw that picks up the clothes, and drops them on an immense pile of other clothes. The sound of a human heart is heard throughout the experience of watching what he did.” (R. Gardner) Robert Gardner and Christian Boltanski first met in the Seventies; by now the mutual admiration between filmmaker and artist has been firmly established.
