Abstract: Immagina di aver vissuto gli ultimi 20 anni della tua vita in una casa a Seaside, una piccola cittadina sulla costa della Florida, divenuta celebre per essere stata il set del film The Truman Show, nonché primo esempio di un nuovo urbanismo di comunità. Immagina di avere passato tutto questo tempo rinchiusa in una sola stanza e di avere finalmente la possibilità di osservare e fotografare il mondo all’esterno. Questa è la storia di Janis Sawyer, una donna segnata da un dolore e da una tragedia inenarrabile. Eppure Janis racconta, con voce dolce e serena, il segreto della sua vita. Seaside non ha mai visto il volto di Janis, piuttosto che uscire lei preferisce utilizzare una videocamera di sorveglianza collegata al suo computer. Sostiene Janis: “Se ti soffermi abbastanza e osservi un po’, tutto verrà incontro a te”. Peter Florian prende in parola l’invito di Janis e realizza un film intenso e penetrante, capace di cogliere la profondità che si nasconde nella superficie delle cose. "Holding Still"è un film che scandaglia con sguardo docile e penetrante, la profondità dell’animo umano e l’abisso in cui può cadere una vita felice. Imagine having spent the last twenty years of your life in a house in Seaside, a small city on the coast of Florida that gained fame for being the set for the film The Truman Show, as well as the first example of a new kind of urban community. Imagine having passed the whole time cooped up in one room, where you finally get the chance to observe and photograph the outside world. This is the story of Janis Sawyer, a woman whose life has been marked by suffering and indescribable tragedy. Yet Janis, in her sweet, serene voice, tells the secret of her life. Seaside has never seen Janis’s face; rather than go outside, she prefers using a surveillance camera connected to her computer. Janis says, “If you hold still long enough, and observe a little bit, everything comes to you.” Peter Florian accepts Janis’s invitation, and has made an intense, penetrating film that captures the profundity beneath the surface of things. Holding Still is a film that plumbs the depths of the human soul and the abyss a happy life can plunge into. An attention-grabbing film, it will keep you glued to the screen as its narrative crescendos.
