Abstract: Girato prevalentemente in bianco e nero, in sintonia con lo stile minimalista del regista, con un cast essenziale al pari del plot, "Mama" può ritenersi, pur essendo un film a soggetto, un esempio delle inclinazioni documentaristiche di Zhang Yuan, dal momento che la narrazione è intervallata dalle interviste a genitori di bambini autistici. Il film racconta il profondo legame – fatto soprattutto di carezze e sorrisi – tra una madre e il proprio figlio di tredici anni, affetto da autismo ed epilessia. A causa della malattia, il ragazzino vive in un mondo tutto suo, incompreso da una società che non lo accoglie e nella quale non riesce a trovare spazio. Sfondo della storia, la città di Beijing, in cui si muove la protagonista, la quale, imperterrita, porta avanti la sua battaglia affinché il figlio infranga il suo isolamento, pur a scapito della sua vita sentimentale e lavorativa. Il marito, infatti, è sempre via per affari, incapace di stabilire qualsiasi contatto con la famiglia. Nel corso del film emerge il fatto che i veri emarginati sono gli altri, coloro che non accettano la malattia e preferiscono occultarla in quanto vergogna. Il grande atto d’amore della donna verrà alla fine premiato quando il ragazzo pronuncerà le prime parole. "Mama", ispirato all’esperienza autobiografica di Qin Yan, sceneggiatrice e protagonista del film, è considerato dalla critica il primo film indipendente cinese dal 1949. Zhang Yuan, infatti, una volta diplomatosi all’Accademia del cinema di Pechino nel 1989, prese la decisione di dirigere film senza l’autorizzazione dell’Ufficio del Cinema, aprendo così la strada alla cosiddetta Sesta Generazione di registi cinesi, accomunati dalla pratica di girare i propri film illegalmente.
Shot mostly in black and white, in keeping with the director's minimalist style, with a cast as essential as the plot, "Mama" can be considered, despite being a subject film, an example of Zhang Yuan's documentary inclinations since the narrative is interspersed with interviews with parents of autistic children. The film recounts the profound bond-made mostly of caresses and smiles-between a mother and her 13-year-old son, who suffers from autism and epilepsy. Because of the disease, the little boy lives in a world of his own, misunderstood by a society that does not welcome him and in which he cannot find a place. The background of the story is the city of Beijing, in which the protagonist moves, who, undaunted, pursues her battle so that her son will break his isolation, albeit at the expense of her love life and work. Her husband, in fact, is always away on business, unable to establish any contact with the family. Throughout the film, the fact emerges that the real outcasts are others, those who do not accept the disease and prefer to conceal it as shame. The woman's great act of love will eventually be rewarded when the boy speaks his first words. "Mama," inspired by the autobiographical experience of Qin Yan, the film's screenwriter and protagonist, is considered by critics to be China's first independent film since 1949. Zhang Yuan, in fact, upon graduating from the Beijing Film Academy in 1989, made the decision to direct films without the permission of the Film Bureau, thus paving the way for the so-called Sixth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, united by the practice of making their films illegally.
