Abstract: Chögyal Namkhai Norbu è uno dei principali maestri viventi del buddismo tibetano. "Ho incontrato Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche nel 1985, quando avevo 25 anni. A 28 anni, mi sono presa un necessario stacco dalla mia attività di cineasta per viaggiare quattro anni con lui, in lungo e in largo, come sua segretaria. Durante quel periodo ho cominciato a filmare la sua vita quotidiana – la sua famiglia e il suo insegnamento – da una prospettiva interna. Nel 1992 ho cominciato a lavorare ad un nuovo progetto e ho messo da parte il materiale girato su Rinpoche. Sebbene lo avessi filmato per anni, non sentivo di avere una storia sufficiente per farne un film. A partire dal 1988 ho iniziato a riprendere anche suo figlio Yeshi, che aveva allora 18 anni. Benché fosse opinione comune che Yeshi fosse la reincarnazione dello zio di Namkhai Norbu, un grande maestro buddista, lui rifiutava con fermezza questa idea, e voleva che lo si lasciasse vivere una vita normale. Gli anni passavano e ho continuato a filmare Yeshi – la sua famiglia, la carriera nel mondo degli affari – quando incrociava la vita di suo padre, senza aspettarmi che qualcosa sarebbe cambiato. Ma nel nuovo millennio, la sua storia ha preso una direzione sorprendente". (J. Fox) Un film che – caso piuttosto eccezionale – si sviluppa nell’arco di venti anni e i cui protagonisti, due maestri spirituali di un’importante comunità dzogchen situata in Toscana, ci vengono mostrati in tutta la loro naturale, e allo stesso tempo eccezionale, umanità. Come una parabola buddista, è una storia che ne contiene all’interno tante altre: un padre invecchia e un figlio raggiunge la maturità; un giovane uomo deve imparare a convivere con la leggenda che lo considera un predestinato; è il racconto, semplice ed emozionante, di come le esperienze accumulate nel corso degli anni si possano rivelare, al momento opportuno, serbatoio di saggezza. Infine è la rivelazione di come un percorso individuale può sfociare, a sorpresa, in dono offerto alla collettività.
Chögyal Namkhai Norbu is one of the leading masters of Tibetan Buddhism today. “I met Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche in 1985 when I was 25 years old. At age 28, I took a much needed hiatus from filmmaking to travel with him on and off for four years as his secretary. During that time, I began to film his everyday life – his family and his teaching – from an insider’s perspective. In 1992, I went back to work to make my next film and put aside the early footage of Rinpoche. Even though I kept filming him over the years, I didn’t feel I had enough of a story to make a film. Starting in 1988, I also began filming his son Yeshi as well, starting from age 18. Although it was common knowledge that Yeshi was the reincarnation of Namkhai Norbu’s uncle, a great Buddhist master, he adamantly resisted the idea, and wanted to be left alone to live a normal life. The years passed, and I continued to film Yeshi, with his growing family and business career, as he intersected with his father’s life, never expecting that anything would change. But in the millennium, his story took an amazing new turn.” (J. Fox) The film develops – rather exceptionally – over an arc of twenty years, and its protagonists, two spiritual masters in an important Dzogchen community in Tuscany, are depicted with all their very human yet at the same time exceptional humanity. Like a Buddhist parable, within the main story lie many other stories: a father ages and his son grows up; a young man learns to live with the legend that considers him predestined; it’s a simple, moving story about how the experiences that accumulate over the years can reveal, at the right moment, a wealth of wisdom. At bottom, what’s revealed is how an individual’s path can lead unexpectedly to a collective gift.
