Abstract: Perché questi apprendisti imam seguono dei corsi all'Istituto Cattolico di Parigi, oltre ai loro studi teologici presso la Grande Moschea? La risposta a questa domanda è che il governo francese vuole assicurarsi che comprendano i principi della Repubblica, la libertà di coscienza e di religione e la sua rigida separazione tra Chiesa e Stato. Paradossalmente, la Sorbona ha rifiutato di offrire questo corso agli studenti religiosi, il che significa che dovranno accontentarsi dell'Istituto Cattolico. Poteva andare peggio: il direttore dell'istituto è un uomo sgargiante che insegna come un attore su un palcoscenico e protegge i suoi studenti dalla stampa, quando necessario. Il modo non proprio bonario in cui la divisione tra lo Stato francese e la Chiesa cattolica ha preso forma offre materiale didattico intrigante.
Why are these imam trainees taking courses at the Catholic Institute in Paris, in addition to their theological studies at the Grand Mosque? The answer to this question is that the French government wants to make sure they understand the principles of the Republic, freedom of conscience and religion, and its strict separation of church and state. Paradoxically, the Sorbonne has refused to offer this course to religious students, which means they will have to make do with the Catholic Institute. It could be worse: the institute's director is a flamboyant man who teaches like an actor on a stage and shields his students from the press when necessary. The less than good-natured way in which the division between the French state and the Catholic Church has taken shape offers intriguing teaching material.
