Abstract: Più della metà di casi di cecità è causata dalla cataratta, un offuscamento del cristallino dell'occhio. Nei paesi in via di sviluppo, come il Nepal, non è solo una tragedia personale, ma può devastare l'economia di intere comunità. Fortunatamente, è anche facile da curare. La chirurgia della cataratta è uno degli interventi medici più efficaci, ma fino a poco tempo fa era considerata troppo costosa da fornire agli abitanti delle campagne. More than half of all cases of blindness are caused by cataracts, a clouding of the lens of the eye. In developing countries, such as Nepal, it is not only a personal tragedy but can devastate the economy of entire communities. Fortunately, it is also easy to treat. Cataract surgery is one of the most effective medical interventions, but until recently it was considered too expensive to provide for rural people. This causes most of the world's blind to reside in remote and impoverished areas. Most doctors operate only in cities. Dr. Sanduk Ruit of Nepal and his American partner, Dr. Geoff Tabin, have developed a low-cost, portable surgical procedure to set up a traveling clinic. They are trekking in Nepal's remote northeast, carrying a small hospital on the backs of porters. Their mission is to restore sight.
