Abstract: Dalla metà degli anni '90 la produzione e l'uso dell'oppio in Vietnam sono stati proibiti, ma questo ha portato alla rapida diffusione di un'altra droga a base di oppiacei: l'eroina, o smack. Iniettata, piuttosto che fumata, l'uso di eroina ha portato rapidamente ad un'epidemia di HIV, il virus si è infatti diffuso attraverso la condivisione di siringhe. Thi e Trung vivono a Dien Bien Phu, nella provincia montuosa del Vietnam al confine con il Laos. Come molti altri giovani che vivono in questa provincia, entrambi convivono con l'HIV. Thi desidera vivere in serenità con sua moglie, per questo è determinato a superare la sua dipendenza, anche se l'ambiente circostante rende difficile il processo, dal momento in cui l'eroina è disponibile ovunque ed abbondantemente. Trung invece è prossimo alla morte. Riflette continuamente sulla vita che avrebbe potuto avere lunga e soddisfacente come quella dei suoi antenati. Per questo sprofonda sempre più nella disperazione e continua a usare l'eroina per sfuggire al presente.
Since the mid-1990s the production and use of opium in Vietnam has been banned, but this has led to the rapid spread of another opiate-based drug: heroin, or smack. Injected, rather than smoked, heroin use quickly led to an HIV epidemic; in fact, the virus spread through sharing syringes. Thi and Trung live in Dien Bien Phu, in Vietnam's mountainous province bordering Laos. Like many other young people living in this province, both are living with HIV. Thi wishes to live peacefully with his wife, so he is determined to overcome his addiction, although his surroundings make the process difficult, since heroin is available everywhere and abundantly. Trung, on the other hand, is close to death. He continually reflects on the life he could have had as long and satisfying as that of his ancestors. Therefore he sinks deeper and deeper into despair and continues to use heroin to escape the present.
