Abstract: Un intreccio di riflessioni sulla precarietà lavorativa, sociale esistenziale analizzati attraverso il punto di vista di Berta che non si sente ancora a casa propria in Portogallo dopo 33 anni che vive in questo paese. È una mozambicana di pelle bianca e si sente ospite in casa altrui. Le sue riflessioni ci portano alla sua vera patria: la città di Beira. Qui si erge il Grande Hotel, simbolo della storia travagliata del Mozambico, testimone oculare del colonialismo, delle feste di fine anno, delle lune di miele, di una rivoluzione e di una guerra civile. Questo megalomane orgoglio e gioia del regime coloniale, costruito nel 1955, era destinato a fallire. Sogno e realtà erano troppo distanti. Un mostro di 12.000 metri quadrati con 110 camere di gran lusso. Non poteva funzionare. Oggi, a 60 anni di distanza, ospita più di 2.500 ospiti "permanenti". Tutto ciò che poteva essere convertito per gli alloggi è stato utilizzato. I residenti hanno pochi contatti con il mondo esterno e formano un'enclave molto settaria. A poco a poco il passato colorato dell'hotel, e quindi del Mozambico, si insinua. I filmati d'archivio danno corpo e sostanza al paradosso, svelando un po' alla volta la storia rivoluzionaria di questo paese e le tracce che essa ha lasciato nell'hotel.
An interweaving of reflections on labor, social existential precarity analyzed through the point of view of Berta who still does not feel at home in Portugal after 33 years living in this country. She is a white-skinned Mozambican and feels like a guest in someone else's home. Her reflections take us to her true homeland: the city of Beira. Here stands the Grande Hotel, a symbol of Mozambique's troubled history, an eyewitness to colonialism, end-of-year festivals, honeymoons, a revolution, and civil war. This megalomaniac pride and joy of the colonial regime, built in 1955, was destined to fail. Dream and reality were too far apart. A 12,000-square-meter monster with 110 rooms of great luxury. It could not work. Today, 60 years later, it houses more than 2,500 "permanent" guests. Everything that could be converted for accommodations has been used. The residents have little contact with the outside world and form a very sectarian enclave. Gradually the colorful past of the hotel, and thus of Mozambique, creeps in. Archival footage gives body and substance to the paradox, revealing bit by bit the revolutionary history of this country and the traces it has left in the hotel.
