Abstract: L’ufficio postale di Kinshasa è una struttura imponente nella quale il tempo pare essersi fermato. Retaggio del passato coloniale, questo ufficio è un pachiderma difficile da alimentare: un White Elephant in cui si sovrappone l’identità belga a quella congolese. Henriette è un’impiegata premurosa quanto disillusa, responsabile di uno sportello a cui non si rivolge quasi più nessuno. Vorrebbe fuggire altrove ma continua imperterrita a compiere il suo lavoro, giorno dopo giorno. Christelle è una giovane studentessa alle prese con una ricerca sul servizio postale, che vorrebbe difendere dai burocrati e dalla diffidenza degli utenti. Attraverso le aspirazioni e le frustrazioni di queste due donne si dipana una storia che descrive con toni surreali la complicata transizione di un Paese africano, stretto tra contraddizioni interne e legami con un passato di sottomissione e subalternità. “Dare una struttura definitiva di questo lavoro è stata una vera sfida. Dopo un lungo periodo di montaggio siamo infine giunti a creare un film che speriamo rifletta sia l’apatia che l’umanità di quei lavoratori che tentano di sfuggire al circolo vizioso in cui un decadente ufficio pubblico li intrappola.” (K. The post office in Kinshasa is a huge building in which time seems to have stopped. A legacy of the colonial past, this office resembles a pachyderm which is difficult to nourish – a White Elephant in which the Belgian identity is superimposed on the Congolese one. Henriette is a solicitous, yet disenchanted clerk who works at a counter where almost no one goes. She would like to escape elsewhere, but she keeps on doing her job anyway, day after day. Christelle is a young student doing research on the mail service, which she would like to defend from bureaucrats and from the mistrust of customers. Through the ambitions and frustrations of these two women, the film describes in a surreal way the difficult transition of an African country, characterized by internal contradictions and by its ties to a past of submission and subordination. “This film was very challenging to structure. After a long editing period we finally achieved a film that we hope reflects both the apathy and the humanity of the workers trying to escape the vicious circle into which the decadent Office Building traps them.” (K.
