Abstract: Questo documentario è basato su un'idea del 2009 e su registrazioni e ricerche iniziate nello stesso anno. Attraverso studi sul campo, interviste e registrazioni di "suonate" e danze tradizionali, si è riusciti a raccogliere e a studiare rituali ed espressioni socio-culturali dell’area geografica del Sacro Monte Gelbison, la quarta montagna più alta della Campania, Italia. Il suo nome deriva dall'espressione saracena “Gebil-el-Son” che vuol dire "Monte dell’Idolo". Ogni anno, nel periodo che va da fine Maggio ad inizio Ottobre, si ripete un antico rituale dedicato alla Vergine del Sacro Monte, che consiste nell'esposizione dell'effige della Vergine all'interno del santuario posto sulla cima del monte. Durante questi mesi, i momenti salienti sono rappresentati dall'antica cerimonia che si svolge all'apertura ed alla chiusura del santuario e dal passaggio dei tanti pellegrini che affrontano un viaggio che, data la lunghezza e la difficoltà del percorso, può durare anche diversi giorni.
This documentary is based on an idea from 2009 and on recordings and research begun in the same year. Through field studies, interviews and recordings of 'sounds' and traditional dances, it was possible to collect and study rituals and socio-cultural expressions of the geographical area of Sacro Monte Gelbison, the fourth highest mountain in Campania, Italy. Its name derives from the Saracen expression 'Gebil-el-Son', which means 'Mount of the Idol'. Every year, in the period from the end of May to the beginning of October, an ancient ritual dedicated to the Virgin of Sacro Monte is repeated, consisting of the exposition of the effigy of the Virgin inside the sanctuary located on the top of the mountain. During these months, the highlights are represented by the ancient ceremony that takes place at the opening and closing of the sanctuary, and by the passage of the many pilgrims who undertake a journey that, given the length and difficulty of the route, can last several days.
