Abstract: A volte la storia può essere catturata in un'immagine, rivelandone l'essenza. 29 giugno 1960: il Congo, la più grande colonia africana ottiene l'indipendenza. In alto a destra, il re belga sta accanto al futuro presidente Kasavubu in una Cadillac decappottabile. Nella sua uniforme bianca come la neve saluta la bandiera belga. Proprio in quel momento un giovane nero ruba la sciabola reale e scappa. Il fotografo, Robert Lebeck, immortala l'incidente in un solo scatto. In "Boyamba Belgique", questa fotografia è il buco della serratura attraverso il quale guardiamo la decolonizzazione dell'Africa. Mentre siamo trascinati in una ricerca rivelatrice sull'identità del ladro, con testimoni oculari, archivi e visite in loco, scaviamo più a fondo nel significato e nel simbolismo di questo atto.
Sometimes history can be captured in an image, revealing its essence. June 29, 1960: Congo, Africa's largest colony gains independence. Above right, the Belgian king stands next to future President Kasavubu in a Cadillac convertible. In his snow-white uniform he salutes the Belgian flag. Just then a young black man steals the royal saber and runs away. The photographer, Robert Lebeck, immortalizes the incident in one shot. In "Boyamba Belgique," this photo is the keyhole through which we view the decolonization of Africa. As we are drawn into a revealing search for the identity of the thief, with eyewitnesses, archives and site visits, we dig deeper into the meaning and symbolism of this act.
