Abstract: Il film si apre su una casa che, a partire da alcune foto in bianco e nero, si materializza in uno spazio presente e insieme ancorato a un’altra epoca, quella del nonno Aníbal, di cui l’autore non ha quasi ricordi. Qui inizia la ricerca del film, intento a ricostruire una figura sfuggente del passato attraverso l’accumulazione delle immagini familiari. In questo processo emerge per associazioni mentali un racconto di Jorge Luis Borges (“In cerca di Averroé”): un testo che si fa riflesso della ricerca dell’autore, declinata attraverso il visuale piuttosto che attraverso le parole della traduzione. Il film si articola come un labirinto di scene fantasmatiche, segni il cui referente è ormai inattingibile, specchi che finiscono sempre per restituire l’immagine dell’autore.L’impossibilità stessa del ritratto diventa il motore di un esercizio speculativo dal sapore combinatorio, che gioca a inventare una biografica onirica per una figura irraggiungibile. Il regista esplora, ispirato da Borges, i paradossi di un gesto impossibile, votato al fallimento: irrimediabilmente invischiata nella soggettività dell’autore, forse è proprio attraverso l’invenzione, l’errore e l’immaginazione che la ricerca di Aníbal può trovare un senso.
The film opens on a house that, from a few black-and white photos, takes shape as a space at once present and anchored in another era, that of grandpa Aníbal, of whom the director has almost no memory. Here begins the film’s search, to reconstruct an elusive figure from the past by way of the accumulation of family images. Along this process, by way of mental association surfaces a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, “Averroes's Search”, i.e., a text that reflects the filmmaker’s own search conducted through visuals rather than translated words. The film is articulated as a labyrinth of phantasmal scenes, signs whose referent is now unattainable, mirrors that end up reflecting the director’s image. The sheer impossibility of portrayal becomes the motive of a speculative exercise, with a touch of combinatorial art, that plays at inventing a dreamlike biography for an unreachable figure. Inspired by Borges, the director explores the paradoxes of an impossible gesture, doomed to failure: irreparably embroiled in his subjectivity, it is possibly by way of invention, error, and imagination that the search for Aníbal can find a meaning.
