Abstract: Documentario di osservazione ed esplorazione della ‘sala macchine’ del turismo di massa del nord Adriatico, in particolare tra Lignano, Jesolo e Riccione. Dalla ‘stagione’ invernale, in cui schiere di laboriosi operai ammassano le preziose risorse sabbiose per difenderle dalle mareggiate, fino all’estate con lo sciamare di turisti e residenti in cerca del loro ‘posto al sole’. Ma il film è anche incentrato sulle tante persone e aziende che operano dietro le quinte, come le ditte che producono ombrelloni e sdraio, gli hotel che si rinnovano e i ristoranti che formano il nuovo personale, le agenzie di animazione e i servizi di polizia locale, i parchi di divertimento acquatici e le torrette di salvataggio sui litorali. I luoghi per eccellenza del “divertimento senza limiti” (per usare l’ironica espressione cara a Ulrich Seidl) mostrati tra empatia e distacco con uno straniante commento musicale, tra i cieli terrei dell’attesa autunnale e la luce abbacinante di una lunga estate al mare.
A documentary of observation that explores the ‘engine room’ of mass tourism in the Northern Adriatic coast, namely around Lignano, Jesolo, and Riccione, from the winter ‘season’ – during which scores of hard-working labour pile up the precious sand to protect beaches from coastal storms – to the summer, with tourists and residents swarming in search of their own “place in the sun.” The film also deals with the many people and companies that work backstage, such as factories that manufacture beach umbrellas and deckchairs, refurbished hotels, restaurants training the new staff, entertainment agencies, local police services, water parks, and lifeguard stations along the seaboard. The places that typically offer “Spaß ohne Grenzen/Endless Entertainment” (borrowing the ironic phrase Ulrich Seidl is fond of) are shown between empathy and detachment, with an alienating musical accompaniment, poised between the ashen skies of the autumnal wait and the blinding light of a long summer spent on the beach.
