Abstract: Film giocato sul fuoricampo, attraverso inquadrature fisse e inquiete, superfici riflettenti che rivelano altri spazi, intimi e pubblici, che nulla danno a intendere dell’esplosione al porto del 2020, del caos politico ed economico, delle rivolte e della disperazione nella quale la città è sprofondata nel 2019. Siamo avvolti dalle voci degli abitanti di Beirut, dai loro ricordi, dalla spuma del mare, dai suoni della città vecchia, dai clacson, dalle musiche che risuonano ovunque. Il fantasma dello splendore della città del dopoguerra vive ancora nella dolcezza dei tramonti, nei ragazzi che si tuffano, nei miagolii dei gatti, nel volto di una signora anziana che fuma e in quello di un guardiano dei morti che sospira. Beirut esiste solo come sogno, negli echi e nelle ombre, negli strati profondi della memoria degli abitanti che la tengono negli occhi, nella dignità, nella malinconia e ancora nella rabbia e nella gioia dei giovani che ballano nella notte.
A film that plays with offscreen space by way of static but restless shots, reflecting surfaces that disclose other, intimate and public, spaces. These offer no hint whatsoever of the 2020 explosion in the port of Beirut, the political and financial chaos, the tumults and despair in which the city plunged in 2019. We are enveloped in the voices of the inhabitants of Beirut, their memories, the sea foam, the sounds of the old town, the car horns, and the music playing everywhere. The ghost of the city’s glory after WWII has survived in the sweetness of its sunsets, the youths taking dives, the cats meowing, the face of a elderly lady smoking, and that of a sexton sighing. Beirut only exists as a dream, in the echoes and shadows, in the dignity, the melancholy, and again in the anger and joy of young people dancing through the night.
