Abstract: È il 4 agosto del 2020, Mounia Akl è pronta a iniziare le riprese del suo primo lungometraggio, Costa Brava, che presenterà un anno dopo alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia, quando un’enorme esplosione nel porto di Beirut devasta la città e la vita della popolazione. Contro ogni previsione la regista decide di portare avanti il proprio progetto, affrontando le condizioni estremamente difficili di un paese paralizzato da una catastrofe e dalle complicazioni del Covid. Cyril Aris segue i retroscena del lavoro sul set e documenta la passione e l’ostinazione di una regista e di una troupe alle prese con quotidiane disavventure, accompagnando il racconto del making of alla rappresentazione della rabbia di una nazione e alla riflessione sulla necessità del processo creativo nonostante tutto. Un film politico, con più traiettorie narrative, che rende omaggio a una Beirut vessata con toni nostalgici e commoventi.
On August 4, 2020, Mounia Akl is about to begin principal photography for her debut feature Costa Brava, that was to premiere one year later at the Venice Film Festival, when a huge explosion in the Beirut harbour annihilates the city and the life of its population. Against all odds, she decides to carry on with her project, facing the unbelievable difficulties entailed by the paralysis of a country after the disaster and by Covid-related complications. Cyril Aris has filmed the backstage, recording the passion and determination of a filmmaker and her crew who tackled misadventures on a daily basis. The making-of is accompanied by the portrayal of an angry country and a reflection on the necessity of the creative process in spite of everything. A political film with several narrative strands that pays homage to a vexed Beirut with nostalgic, touching tones.
