Abstract: Un gruppo di uomini in uniforme gioca a softair in un bosco. Le azioni militari simulate si svolgono là dove la guerra è arrivata per davvero, pochi decenni prima, nelle colline che circondano Sarajevo. Oltre venticinque anni dopo la fine del conflitto in Bosnia, alcuni dei sopravvissuti hanno messo in piedi delle attività turistiche. Molti luoghi del dolore sono diventati attrazioni per i viaggiatori: una forma di business, ma anche la via per una sorta di catarsi, in un paese dove il fantasma del conflitto continua ad essere presente. Souvenirs of War, a metà tra saggio e documentario d’osservazione corale, è una profonda riflessione sulla memoria della guerra in Bosnia. Trent’anni dopo lo scoppio del sanguinoso conflitto, e con una nuova guerra alle porte dell’Europa, Georg Zeller mette lo spettatore di fronte a un mondo che prova a fare i conti, in maniera diversa e talvolta speculativa, con l’eredità del genocidio, tra tour turistici, commemorazioni militari ed emulazioni virtuali.
A group of uniformed men are playing softair in a wood. The simulated war actions take place where war happened for real, a few decades earlier, on the hills surrounding Sarajevo. Over twenty-five years after the end of the conflict in Bosnia, some survivors put up tourist activities. Several places of sorrow have become tourist attractions: a form of business, but also the road to a sort of catharsis in a country still haunted by the ghost of the war. Souvenirs Of War, halfway between essay and collective observational documentary, is an in-depth reflection on the memory of the war in Bosnia. Thirty years on from the outbreak of the bloody conflict, and with a new war at the gates of Europe, Georg Zeller places the spectator in front of a world that attempts to cope, with a different and sometimes speculative approach, with the legacy of genocide among organized tours, military commemorations, and virtual simulations.
