Abstract: Un viaggio nella misteriosa isola di Gomera, luogo ancestrale, senza tempo, in cui passato e presente si confondono riconnettendo gli abitanti alla storia antica dei loro antenati. Nella solitudine delle montagne un uomo si aggira tra le caverne sognando di volare, alcuni bambini camminano per i boschi alla scoperta dei suoni della foresta mentre altri si ritrovano in un laboratorio ad esaminare i resti di chi ha vissuto nell’isola molto tempo prima. A partire dalle parole della tradizionale canzone di Gomera “El Canto des Los Años Nuevos”, Alexander Cabeza realizza un film poetico e affascinante, fatto di atmosfere suggestive e paesaggi rarefatti in cui risuona il fischio del silbo, antica forma di comunicazione ancora in uso nell’isola. Realizzato in collaborazione con gli abitanti del luogo, The Song of the Years to Come restituisce la visione di una pratica documentaria partecipativa che coinvolge le voci dei locali nel processo creativo e utilizza il gioco e l’immaginazione come strumenti di indagine del territorio.
A journey to the mysterious island of Gomera, an ancestral, timeless place where past and present mingle, reconnecting the inhabitants with the ancient history of their ancestors. In the seclusion of the mountains, a man wanders through the caves dreaming of flying; some children walk through the woods discovering the sounds of the forest; others meet in a laboratory and examine the remains of those who lived on the island long ago. Departing from the lyrics of the traditional Gomera song "El Canto des Los Años Nuevos", Alexander Cabeza makes a poetic and fascinating film with evocative atmospheres and rarefied landscapes across which the whistle of silbo, an ancient form of communication still in use on the island, resounds. Made in collaboration with the locals, The Song of the Years to Come offers the vision of a participatory documentary practice that involves the voices of the locals in the creative process and uses play and imagination as tools for investigating the territory.
