Abstract: Quando sua madre muore nella foresta al confine tra Polonia e Bielorussia, la sedicenne curda Runa deve crescere rapidamente e prendersi cura dei suoi quattro fratelli minori e del padre, depresso e indifeso. La famiglia affronta il trauma in un campo profughi e cerca di costruirsi una nuova vita in Polonia. La paura più grande di Runa è quella di essere costretta a tornare in Iraq, dove i curdi devono affrontare la minaccia dell'ISIS. Il suo sogno è di vivere come i suoi nuovi amici europei e diventare avvocato. Ma proprio quando il suo sogno di tornare a scuola si realizza, appare un'altra minaccia: quella del rimpatrio. La fuga di Runa dai suoi problemi quotidiani è affidata ad un quaderno di schizzi pieno di disegni che esprimono i suoi sentimenti. A poco a poco, i disegni prendono vita. Il film - parzialmente realizzato con la tecnica dell’animazione - racconta il passaggio all'età adulta ai tempi della crisi mondiale dei rifugiati.
When her mother dies in the forest on the border between Poland and Belarus, 16-year-old Kurdish girl Runa must quickly grow up and take care of her four younger siblings and her depressed and helpless father. The family faces trauma in a refugee camp and tries to build a new life in Poland. Runa's greatest fear is being forced to return to Iraq, where the Kurds face the threat of ISIS. Her dream is to live like her new European friends and become a lawyer. But just as her dream of returning to school is realised, another threat appears: that of repatriation. Runa's escape from her daily problems is entrusted to a sketchbook full of drawings expressing her feelings. Little by little, the drawings come to life. The film - partially made with the animation technique - tells the story of the transition to adulthood at the time of the world refugee crisis.
