Over the past 20 years the Catalonian painter Miquel Barceló has spent long periods in Africa. There he learnt to paint among the termites and scorpions, in the heat and the wind, and rediscovered ancient signs and shapes whose origins date back several centuries. “In Africa, while we were preparing to shoot some sequences from the script of “Los pasos dobles”, Barceló would show us something unexpected, something we could not ignore. Only, it was impossible to include this in the film, so I felt the need to use all this material in a new documentary entirely devoted to the work and life of Miquel Barceló in Africa” (I. Lacuesta). With an attentive and curious gaze, the film follows the different steps of the performance Paso doble realized by Barceló along with the choreographer Josef Nadj. It describes not only the poetics or the outlook of an artist, but rather his ‘job’, his relationship with the stuff of the world – clay, mud, leaves, tree bark – the ancestral raw materials whereby man first experienced reality.
