Abstract: Nel 1965, esce “A sangue freddo” di Truman Capote, che fa del suo autore una star internazionale della letteratura. Nello stesso anno, poco dopo la pubblicazione del romanzo, lo scrittore riceve una giornalista nella sua casa di fronte al mare. Albert e David Maysles riprendono il colloquio, nel quale Capote rivela la sua autostima attraverso una filosofia alla moda e delle ben calcolate battute di spirito. Con una voce stridente che fa tenerezza, egli offre delle interpretazioni del suo ultimo libro, visto come esemplare di un nuovo genere letterario, il «romanzo non narrativo». “A sangue freddo” è basato sul resoconto di un vero omicidio. L’autore espone con passione la sua partecipazione al processo e la coinvolgente relazione intessuta con i due giovani assassini. Capote afferma che è l’imprevedibilità della vita a spingerlo verso tale rappresentazione della realtà, ma è il suo modo di fare e il suo senso dell’umorismo che ci intriga e coinvolge fino alla fine. Come i due registi che lo riprendono, i quali trasformano delle storie vere in racconti, Capote, attraverso la sua scrittura, cerca di fare della realtà un’arte.
In 1965 Truman Capote’s “In cold blood” first appeared, making the author an international literary star. That same year, a little after the book’s publication, the writer received a journalist at his beach house. Albert and David Maysles filmed the interview in which Capote puts his pride on display, speaking of the philosophies of the day and making well-calculated, spirited jokes. In his shrill yet endearing voice, he offers up his own interpretations of his latest book, which is seen as an example of a new literary genre: the «non-fiction novel». In Cold Blood is based on the true account of a murder. The author passionately explains his participation in the process and the absorbing relationship he formed with the two young killers. Capote insists that life’s unpredictability pushed him toward such a representation of the truth, but in the end it’s his own mannerisms and sense of humor that we find so intriguing and fascinating. Like the two directors filming him (who transform true stories into stories), Capote, in his writing, makes an effort to turn reality intro art.
