Abstract: Avendo lavorato all’allestimento teatrale di “Tectonic Plates” di Robert Lepage ed essendo stato molto colpito dalle modalità partecipazionali attraverso le quali l’autore metteva in gioco il suo lavoro nell’interazione con le interpretazioni e le improvvisazioni degli attori, Mettler accetta l’incarico di adattare cinematograficamente il lavoro del drammaturgo. La metafora delle zolle tettoniche rappresenta le modalità sempre nuove e spiazzanti attraverso le quali le donne e gli uomini si perdono, si ritrovano, s’incontrano, si conoscono. La pittrice Madeleine (Marie Gignac) è innamorata del suo professore d’educazione artistica Jacques (Robert Lepage), ignara che lo è anche il bibliotecario sordomuto Antoine (Richard Fréchette). Quando Jacques scompare senza lasciare tracce, Madeleine si reca a Venezia progettando di togliersi la vita. Conosce però Constance (Céline Bonnier), una tossicodipendente con la quale intreccia una relazione molto forte. Ancora una volta, Mettler approccia la realizzazione del film con modalità simili all’improvvisazione musicale, “suonare è una strategia per visualizzare”. Nonostante la struttura del testo di partenza di Lepage, il regista si muove con grande autonomia fra gli strati di una narrazione frammentata che anticipa la libertà formale dei suoi lavori successivi.
Mettler had worked in the staging of Robert Lepage’s “Tectonic Plates”, and was struck by the participatory methods used by the author putting his play at stake in an interaction with the actors’ acting and improvisation. Mettler then agreed to make a film adaptation of the play. The metaphor of the tectonic plates stands for the ever new and destabilising ways in which women and men separate, meet, and come to know each other. Painter Madeleine (Marie Gignac) is in love with her art history instructor Jacques (Robert Lepage). She doesn’t know that so is deaf-mute librarian Antoine (Richard Fréchette). When Jacques disappears and leaves no trace behind, Madeleine goes to Venice aiming to commit suicide. There she meets Constance (Céline Bonnier), a drug addict whom she bonds with. Once again, Mettler’s approach to film-making is similar to musical improvisation: “to play music is a strategy to see in pictures.” Despite the structure given by Lepage’s source text, Mettler finds his own pace between the layers of a fragmented narrative, foreshadowing the formal freedom of his next works.
