Abstract: Hector aveva otto anni quando suo padre lo portò a Gainesville, la cosiddetta "capitale mondiale del pollame" nel cuore del sud americano. Olga aveva dodici anni quando suo padre attraversò a nuoto il Rio Grande portandosela sulla schiena. I loro genitori finirono a lavorare nelle fabbriche di polli. Thomas aveva sedici anni quando sua madre lo mise su un autobus da solo, con una borsa di tacos, per affrontare un viaggio di 2.000 miglia. Lost in Gainesville ripercorre il loro viaggio, intrecciando il viaggio in autobus da Janicho in Messico per 2.000 miglia fino a Gainesville, mentre parlano di come sono cresciuti tra speranze e sogni perduti, cosa riserva ora il futuro, in una città dove il lavoro è scomparso, dove i fascisti organizzano marce di protesta contro di loro e dove i bianchi ricchi ricordano un passato di gloria ormai sbiadita.
Hector was eight when his father brought him to Gainesville, the self-styled ‘poultry capital of the world’ in the heart of the American south. Olga was twelve when her father swam the Rio Grande with her on his back. Their parents came to work in the chicken factories. Thomas was sixteen when his mother put him on a bus alone, with a bag of tacos for the 2,000 mile journey. Lost in Gainesville retraces their journey, interweaving the bus journey from Janicho in Mexico 2,000 miles to Gainesville, as they talk of growing up amongst lost hopes and dreams, what the future holds now, in a town where work has dried up, where fascists march against them and where rich whites live out lives of faded glory.
