Abstract: Un vecchio pittore racconta al cineasta i modi e i tempi della sua pittura: i luoghi, i corpi, le fantasticherie prendono vita prima davanti alla macchina da presa, poi sulla tela. Sono immagini meravigliose, coloratissime e dal gusto quasi infantile: i critici le chiamano «naïf», ma esse trasmettono a chi le guarda una grande emozione nei confronti della vita. Il film, che mostra la varietà di espressione di un'arte così soggettiva, vinse il premio come miglior documentario al festival del cinema nazionale Lielais Kristaps nel 1992. All'epoca, la maggior parte della società non conosceva questo settore dell'arte (il museo dell'arte naïf di Riga nacque più tardi). Il film di Dainis Kļava mostra la varietà di espressione del sé e il forte legame con le sorprese riservate dal destino in questa sorta di pittura primitiva.
An old painter recounts the methods of his art to the filmmaker; places, bodies, daydreams take life before the camera and on the canvas. They are marvelous images with brilliant near-infantile colors; critics call them «naïf», but they transmit a great, life-affirming message to their viewer. The film, which displays the variety of expression of a suggestive art, won the award for best documentary at Lielais Kristaps, the international film festival in 1992. At the time, the majority of society did not know this school of art (the museum of naïf art in Riga was founded afterward). Dainis Kļava's film shows the variety of self-expression and the strong ties to the surprises of destiny in this kind of primitive painting.
