Abstract: Il 4 luglio del 1946 in un pogrom a Kielce, la folla trucida 42 ebrei sopravvissuti alla Seconda Guerra Mondiale e alla Shoah. Quarant’anni dopo, nel 1987, Marcel Łoziński torna negli stessi luoghi e incontra alcuni testimoni della strage. Durante gli incontri/interviste con i suoi canuti interlocutori – vecchie donne e vecchi uomini che conservano ancora chiaro il ricordo di quei giorni – il regista non sembra tanto interessato dalla ricostruzione puntuale di quel singolo episodio di violenza: quel che raccoglie è invece una grande quantità di aneddoti, dettagli, voci e dicerie, pareri personali e luoghi comuni condivisi ma impliciti, sparsi frammenti di un quadro vasto dentro il quale l’antisemitismo appare a un tratto tutt’altro che accidentale e imprevedibile. Si inizia dalle immagini d’archivio e alle immagini d’archivio si torna poco prima della fine: ma tra la prima e la seconda apparizione delle casse di legno che giacciono allineate in fondo a una buca, la posizione dello spettatore cambia, non solo perché cambia la quantità delle informazioni a sua disposizione, ma perché, nel frattempo, il suo punto di vista è qualitativamente cambiato slittando dalla retorica dell’assertività all’etica del dubbio.
On July 4th, 1946, there was a pogrom in Kielce, Poland. The crowd slaughtered forty-two Jews that had survived WWII and the Shoah. Forty years later, in 1987, Marcel Łoziński visited those places and met some witnesses of the carnage. During the interviews with his white-haired interlocutors – elderly women and elderly men, who seem to keep the memory of those days very alive – the film director doesn’t seem to be interested in a detailed reconstruction of the individual episode of violence. He is more keen on little anecdotes, details, rumours, gossip, personal opinions and shared, implicit clichés, the scattered fragments of a big picture that actually presents anti-Semitism as everything but accidental and unforeseeable. The same archive footage opens and closes the film. Between the first and the second run of wooden coffins lying at the bottom of a hole in the ground, the viewer’s position has changed. Not only has he/she had a lot of information, but their point of view has changed in quality, shifting from the rhetoric of assertiveness to the ethics of doubt.
