Abstract: Esiste un legame tra l'opera d'arte e i luoghi in cui nasce? Le geografie e le architetture che hanno inquadrato la sua genesi e accompagnato la sua scrittura si insediano nelle sue forme? Viaggiando attraverso i testi e gli spazi dell'avanguardia inglese, questo film interroga i segni del paesaggio - urbano, rurale e marittimo - che si estese sotto l'occhio di una generazione di artisti particolarmente inquieta; per scoprire se e come abbia lasciato tracce di sé sulla pagina scritta, sulla tela o nelle forme della scultura. La camera ci porta dalla Londra portuale di Ford Madox Ford e di Virginia Woolf alla "colonia" artistica di St. Ives in Cornovaglia, dalle case storiche e sontuose appartenute a Vita Sackville West e a Rudyard Kipling, agli spazi intimi della pittrice Vanessa Bell e di sua sorella Virginia Woolf. Ci muoviamo tra artisti spesso paradossali, alla ricerca delle proprie radici e, al tempo stesso, sempre pronti ad attraversare la Manica per cercare in Francia e altrove ciò che la Gran Bretagna non era in grado di offrire; come accadde a Bloomsbury-sur-mer, a Cassis o a Saint-Rémy, in Provenza, per vent'anni veri e propri cuori pulsanti della modernità. Il documentario non intende in alcun modo "ricostruire" il paesaggio geografico e culturale dell'epoca, ma coglierne le tracce e talvolta ripescarle dall'oblio attraverso l'adozione di uno sguardo contemporaneo. Di costa in costa, di casa in casa, emerge il ritratto di una stagione culturale eccezionale della Gran Bretagna e quello di una generazione dall'indole nomade, amante degli spazi di confine e incline alle forme erranti.
Is there a connection between the work of art and the places where it is born? Do the geographies and architectures that framed its genesis and accompanied its writing settle in its forms? Travelling through the texts and spaces of the English avant-garde, this film interrogates the signs of the landscape - urban, rural and maritime - which stretches out under the eye of a particularly restless generation of artists; to discover if and how it leaves traces of itself on the written page, the canvas or in the forms of sculpture. The camera takes us from the harbor London of Ford Madox Ford and Virginia Woolf to the artistic 'colony' of St. Ives in Cornwall, from the historic and sumptuous houses of Vita Sackville West and Rudyard Kipling to the intimate spaces of the painter Vanessa Bell and her sister Virginia Woolf. We move among artists who are often paradoxical, in search of their roots and at the same time always ready to cross the Channel to look in France and elsewhere for what Great Britain does not offer, as happens at Bloomsbury-sur-mer in Cassis or in Saint-Rémy in Provence, for twenty years a true hotbed of modernity. The documentary does not intend in any way to 'reconstruct' the geographical and cultural landscape of the time, but to pick up traces of it and sometimes dig them out of oblivion, through a contemporary gaze. From coast to coast, from house to house, the portrait of an exceptional cultural season of Great Britain emerges, as well as that of a generation with a gypsy nature, a lover of borderline spaces and prone to wandering forms.
