Abstract: Secondo i due registi c’è una linea diretta che, partendo dall’assassinio di Martin Luter King passa per altri momenti-chiave come la marcia da Selma a Montgomery, la battaglia per il voto, le cariche della polizia ed arriva fino all’elezione di Barack Obama. È una linea in cui si trovano i diritti, le aspirazioni e i grandi ideali di un movimento fatto di uomini, donne e... musica! Se ogni movimento ha bisogno di un ritmo, la rivoluzione nera ebbe un’intera colonna sonora. “Le «Freedom Songs» furono uno straordinario punto di convergenza tra la politica, l’arte e l’attivismo. Le canzoni sono da una parte degli incredibili brani musicali, ma dall’altra sono state anche l’ispirazione per una rivoluzione. Noi abbiamo fatto un film per celebrare la musica e anche le persone che la cantavano.” (B. Guttentag e D. Sturman). Con le testimonianze dei protagonisti dell’epoca, materiali d’archivio e intense interpretazioni musicali, il film racconta la storia del movimento di rivendicazione dei diritti civili in America attraverso le canzoni cantate nelle manifestazioni, nelle riunioni, nelle celle delle prigioni. Canzoni fatte di libertà, speranza, giustizia, eguaglianza e un’incontenibile carica d’energia.
According to the filmmakers, there’s a direct line that runs from the assassination of M.L. King to other key moments, like the marches in Selma and Montgomery, the fight for the vote and police riots, all the way to the election of Barack Obama. It’s a line where one finds the rights, aspirations and grand ideals of a movement between men, women and... music! If every movement needs a rhythm, the «Black Revolution» had an entire soundtrack. “The freedom songs are an extraordinary convergence between politics, art, and activism. The songs stand on their own as incredible pieces of music, but they also helped to inspire a revolution. We made a film to celebrate the music, and also the people who sang it.” (B. Guttentag e D. Through interviews of people from the period, archival materials and intense musical performances, this film tells the story of the movement for the re-vindication of civil rights in America through the songs sung at protests, meetings, and in prison cells. Songs of liberty, hope, justice, equality and an overwhelming surge of energy.
