Abstract: Il musicista jazz americano di fama mondiale Jon Hendricks è stato uno dei quasi 1 milione di "GI" neri che hanno combattuto in Europa contro i nazisti - e contro il razzismo e la discriminazione nel suo stesso esercito e nella società. In Europa durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale, l'allora 22enne Jon Hendricks - come altri 900.000 "GI" neri - combatteva su due fronti: contro i nazisti e contro la discriminazione razziale e l'apartheid nell'esercito americano degli Stati Uniti. Per Hendricks, che ora ha 87 anni, alla fine la sua lotta si è rivelata una doppia vittoria trionfale, anche se non ha mai sparato un colpo. Questo documentario racconta la storia avventurosa e commovente di Jon Hendricks, che - a causa della costante discriminazione razziale e delle molestie - disertò l'esercito come fecero tanti afroamericani. Il film contribuisce anche alla storia del Jazz, all'inizio musica disprezzata poi entrata a far parte della cultura umana acclamata in tutto il mondo.
World renowned American Jazz musician Jon Hendricks was one of almost 1 Mio black GIs who fought in Europe against the Nazis – and against racism and discrimination within his own army and society. In Europe during War War II, then 22 year old Jon Hendricks – as 900.000 other black GIs – was fighting on two fronts: against the Nazis and against racial discrimination and apartheit in the US Army as well as in the United States. For Hendricks, who is now 87, it finally turned out to be a triumphant double victory although he never fired a shot . This documentary tells the adventureous and moving story of Jon Hendricks, who – because of constant race discrimination and harassment – deserted the army as did so many Afro-Americans. The film contributes also to the history of Jazz, from the beginning as despised negro-music, to a worldwide acclaimed part of mankinds culture.
